Extreme sports athletes can benefit quite a bit from the use of camcorders designed to attach to their bodies and film as they are doing the sport. Whether it is skiing, snowboards, skate boarding, BMX biking, motocross, surfing, or other extreme sports, a body cam can offer a view point of form/technique and the course taken that can be helpful when training. The first big standout feature of extreme sports camcorders is their size. They should be very small and lightweight, because they are intended to be strapped onto the body, such as through a head band, armband, chest harness, etc. The size of these extreme cameras can range from the size of a lipstick to a hot dog. Because they may be positioned where you cannot directly see the video camera, the controls should be extremely simple (maybe one or two buttons) when filming. However, setting up for filming may be more complex. The extreme sports camcorder should also have an indicator that the camera is recording, such as a sound or a bright flashing light that can be reflected off a hand.

The really important features to look for are quality and image stabilization. Filming quality, or resolution, is best when at 1080p. For slow motion, 720p is also quite good. The prices of extreme sports camcorders have a wide range, from ₤25 to around ₤400. However, the very cheap camcorders usually do not have the quality necessary for the motion inherent in extreme sports. Mid-range camcorders, from about ₤125 to ₤250 should work well for amateurs and even semi-pro athletes, while professionals will want full 1080p definition.

Depending on what type of extreme sports is being pursued, the camcorder may need to be waterproof. It may also need accessories that make it possible to attach to a bicycle or other equipment. In consideration of budget, it is important to think about what you will be using your extreme sports camcorder for and then adding up the cost of camera and the necessary accessories. Some come with the extreme sports camcorders, while others must be purchased separately. Because it is not necessary during the actual filming, even the viewfinder may be a separate purchase.
